SACRED VESSELS


HOLY CHALICE (Gr. Potirion; Sl. Vozduh, Communion Cup) - A large cup (preferably silver- or gold-plated), with a long-stemmed base, used for the Eucharist. It is one of the most sacred vessels of the church and is handled only by the clergy. Before the Liturgy, wine and water are poured into this sacred vessel, which are transformed into the Blood of Christ during the Liturgy.


DISKOS (Paten) - A small, round and flat plate on a stand (preferably silver- or gold-plated). The bread is placed upon it for consecration, where it is transformed into the Body of Christ during the Liturgy. The Diskos symbolizes both the manger and the tomb of the Saviour.


STAR (Gr. "little stars;" Sl. Zvezditsa, Asterisk)

The Star is composed of two metal arcs fixed about the center, which can be opened and closed into a cruciform shape. It is placed on the Diskos so that the cover will not disturb the cut out portions of prosphora. The Star symbolizes the star that appeared at the birth of Christ.


SPEAR (Lance, Lonche) - it is a blade resembling a miniature spear. It is used to cut out the Lamb and other portions from the prosphora. It symbolizes the spear which wounded Christ upon the Cross.


SPOON - The Communion Spoon is used to administer Holy Communion.

This is a brand new high-polished nickel-plated Chalice (approx. dimensions: diameter of the cup: 4", diameter at the base: 5 1/3", and 9 5/6" in height) and gold-plated inside. It is adorned with Slavonic Church Scripts (goes around the cup) as well as gold-plated trimming on top.

This is a brand new brass Liturgical Set for the Anointing of the Sick that consist of: a tray and centered non-detachable cup (tray is 7 7/8” in diameter, cup is 3 1/7” in height and 2 3/4" in diameter) with engraved religious ornaments, an anointing stick (6" in length), glass cup and cover with cross on top (3 1/7" in height).


ANOINTING OF THE SICK is often administered near the time of death, to bring spiritual and even physical strength during an illness. It is most likely one of the last sacraments one will receive. A sacrament is an outward sign established by Jesus Christ to confer inward grace. In more basic terms, it is a rite that is performed to convey God’s grace to the recipient, through the power of the Holy Spirit.

This is a brand new brass Salver for Communion Bread (approx. dimensions: 14 1/2" in diameter) highly-ornamented with engraved religious symbols.


SALVER FOR COMMUNION BREAD - A bread tray containing the prosphora (special leavened bread that is stamped with a wooden seal before it is baked in the oven), Particles are removed from the bread prior to the Divine Liturgy to commemorate various saints of the church as well as the living and departed members of the local congregation. The rest of the bread is cut up and distributed to everyone present at the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy.

CS113 Double-Sided Prosphora Seal – SET OF THREE
This is a SET OF THREE brand new wooden/ plastic Double-Sided Proshora Seals (approx. dimensions: bishop side is 5 1/8” in diameter, priest side is 2 5/9" in diameter, and 1 4/7" in height). The Prosphoro seal is used by the priest or bishop for the preparation of the altar bread.


PROSPHORA SEAL (Sphragis or Panagiari) - A special seal used to stamp on top the altar bread (proshoro) which is leavened and prepared with pure wheat flour to be used for the Eucharist.

This brand new brass Litiya Set adorned with religious engravings consist of couple of parts stuck together: the TRAY (approx. dimensions: 15 3/4” in diameter), small DISKOS (approx. dimensions: 6 2/7” in diameter, 3 1/2” in height) placed in the center, CANDLESTICK (approx. dimensions: 6” in width, 7 7/8” in height), three STANDS FOR CUPS with covers adorned with cross on top (approx. dimensions: 2 1/3” in diameter, 6 2/7” overall height). LITIYA SET is used during the Vespers (Gr. Esperinos; Sl. Litiya) - an important service of the Orthodox Church, held in the evening, which is mainly a Thanksgiving prayer for the closing day and a welcome of the new one to come the following morning. On the eve of an important holiday, the Vesper Service includes Artoclasia or the blessing of the five loaves (Gr. artos; Sl. Litiya) for health and the well-being of the faithful. Five prosphoras are used in the Proskomedia to recall the five loaves with which Christ miraculously fed the five thousand, an event which gave Jesus Christ the means to teach the people about spiritual nourishment, about the incorrupt, spiritual food which is bestowed in the Mystery of Holy Communion (John 6:22-58).

The ASTERISK has two arched metal bands held together in such a fashion as to form the shape of a cross. It is placed on the paten and serves to prevent the veil from touching the particles of the Eucharist. This sacred vessel symbolizes the star that appeared at the birth of Christ.


The SPEAR (10 5/8” in length) is a small, lance-shaped, double-edged knife used by the priest for the cutting of the altar bread in the service of the Preparation of the Holy Gifts. It symbolizes the spear which wounded Christ upon the Cross.


The SPOON (10” in length) is used to administer Holy Communion.
